About MCPI Private Limited instead of Materials Chemicals & Performance Intermediates Pvt Ltd.
Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation (MCC), is Japan's largest diversified chemical company. It is among the top 10 Chemical Companies of the world. MCC has its operations in around 50 countries and leads about 282 affiliate companies across the globe. Production and sale of Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) is one of the core businesses of MCC.
Seeing the vast potential for polyester products in the country, MCC decided to set up its own manufacturing facility in Haldia in 1997. It entered into a shareholders' agreement with some Japanese Trading Houses and the Government of West Bengal, for setting up an affiliate company, MCC PTA India Corp. Private Limited (MCPI), headquartered in Kolkata.
With an initial investment of Rs, 1,475 crore (US$ 245 million at the then prevailing rate), MCPI emerged as Japan's largest Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in India and began construction of a 350,000 tonne PTA plant at Haldia, West Bengal.
Completed on schedule by the end of 1999, the plant commenced commercial production of PTA in April, 2000, equipped with the highest safety and environment standards. MCPI enhanced its capacity through de-bottlenecking to 470,000 tonnes in December 2003. In 2006 MCPI decided to set up a Mega Expansion Project to add a further 800,000 ton of capacity at an additional investment of Rs 1,962 crores. The new line has commenced production since March 2010.

- Purified Terephthalic Acid, a white solid powder is the preferred raw material and basic building block to produce Polyester Stable Fibres (PSF), Polyester Filament Yarns (PFY), bottle and industrial grade polyester resins, polyester chips and so on.
- Polyester Staple Fibres and Filament Yarns are the substitute of natural cotton and widely used for production of textiles and garments.
- Polyester resin/chips are further processed to produce audio/video CD's, x-ray films, photographic films, cine films, packaging films, metalized films, tapes, jars, aseptic bottles for packaging mineral water, carbonated drinks, vegetable oils, cosmetics, toiletries, tea, coffee and so on.
With a cumulative capacity of 1.27 MM Ton, MCPI has successfully emerged as a major supplier of PTA for the Polyester industry having a share of 30% of the market. It is committed to maintain stable supply of good quality raw material to the polyester industry, thereby contributing to the growth of the downstream PSF, PFY and PET Resin plants in the country.
