Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) is a Government of India undertaking Maharatna Oil and Gas company headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra. The company is India's 2nd largest downstream oil company and is ranked 314 th on the Fortune list of the world's biggest corporations as of 2018. BPCL ranked 672 in the Forbes 2018 list. BPCL is India’s 6th largest company by turnover over & 2nd largest Oil Marketing Company (OMC) during FY18.

  • Formation of BPCL
    BPCL was incorporated on 24 January 1976, when Burmah Shell was taken over by the Government of India to form Bharat Refineries Limited, consequent to passing of Burmah Shell Acquisition Act by the parliament. On 1 st August 1977, it was renamed Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited. It was also the first refinery to process newly found indigenous crude Bombay High. On 12 September 2017, BPCL received the coveted Maharatna status, putting it in the category of government-owned entities in India with the largest market capitalization and consistently high profits.
  • Current Businesses
    Bharat Petroleum operates four refineries in India i.e. Mumbai Refinery (1955), Kochi Refinery (1966), BORL-Bina Refinery (Bharat Oman Refineries Limited, a joint venture between Bharat Petroleum and Oman Oil Company) & Numaligarh Refinery (1999) with a combined crude oil refining capacity of 38.3 mmtpa. The company business is divided in to seven SBUs (Strategic Business Units), like Retail, Lubricants, Aviation, Refinery, Industrial & Commercial and LPG. Bharat Petroleum entered the upstream sector in 2003 with an aim to provide partial supply security of crude and hedging of price risks and to become a vertically integrated oil company. A wholly owned subsidiary company of Bharat Petroleum, by the name Bharat Petro Resources Limited (BPRL) was incorporated in October 2006.
  • BPCL Petrochemical Initiatives
    BPCL has adopted diversification in to Petrochemicals as a strategy for future growth.The execution of Propylene Derivatives Petrochemical Project (PDPP) at Kochi, which marks foray of BPCL into Petrochemical sector is progressing fast. The project is also supporting ‘Make In India’ initiatives by Govt of India. The project is scheduled for mechanical completion during 1 st half of 2019. Feedstock for the project is Polymer Grade Propylene produced from Petro FCCU unit of BPCL Kochi Refinery and product portfolio covers Niche Petrochemicals viz, Acrylic Acid, Oxo Alcohols and Acrylates. These petrochemicals are used in the manufacture of paints, water treatment chemicals, detergent, adhesives, sealants, solvents, plasticisers, etc.
    BPCL Kochi Refinery has commenced another major project to set up its second Petrochemical complex for producing Polyether Polyols, Propylene Glycol and Mono Ethylene Glycol. The Polyols complex is expected to go on stream by 2023.
    BPCL Mumbai Refinery has proposed two major projects to be located in Mumbai and Rasayani. Polypropylene Project which is currently being proposed is expected to be completed by 2023.This facility will produce various grades of Polypropylene. Feasibility of a second major project at Rasayani to produce various Polyethylene grades and many other value added Petrochemcials is also being studied.
